Antigua

The CSA dinghy championship will be held July 16 & 17. This tournament includes competition from a maximum of six Caribbean countries, with racing in Laser, Zoom 8, Optimist and Sport 16 classes. Keep up to date with AYC news by emailing yachtclub@candw.ag

Cuba

The 55th Ernest Hemingway International Fishing Tournament wrapped up on May 23. The world-famous event, hosted by the Hemingway International Yacht Club, drew 14 boats and 77 anglers from the US, Canada, Bermuda, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, France, Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Bahamas, Austria, Venezuela and Cuba. The tournament was recently chosen by the International Game Fishing Association as one of the qualifying events for the 2006 Rolex Offshore Championship.

Winners were: First Valid Capture, Mr Melquiades Gonzalez, Spain, Costa Azul. Biggest Dolphin (28lbs): Darryl Finlayson, New Zealand, Lady Jenn. Overall: Marlin X, France (700 points). As a result, Marlin X’s crew will represent the Hemingway Club in the 2006 Rolex Championship.

Dominican Republic

Casa de Campo will be hosting the 4th ‘Regata Marina Casa de Campo’ on Friday/Saturday, 22-23 July. Around 30 sailboats and 15 Formula windsurfers are expected to compete in Racing, Cruiser A/B, Multihull and Formula Windsurf A/B classes respectively.

Friday sees the Windsurf classes tackle a windward/leeward course, while Saturday is the 24-mile race from Casa de Campo to Catalina Island – for both sailboats and windsurfers.

This year, the regatta will round off with a Jazz Festival, sponsored by Heineken. 10 Sailing teams from Puerto Rico are also slated to attend, bringing a fleet of J-24 and J-80 boats over on the ferry.

Royal BVI

The Lowell Wheatley Memorial Anegada Pursuit Race kicks off this month on the 16th of July and the IC24 International will be held on the 23/24 of July. The IC24s were originally developed in St Thomas by Chris Rosenberg and are a J24 with most of the cockpit cut away. In last year’s inaugural IC24 Regatta, Rosenberg emerged victorious from an 11-strong field, with competitors coming from St Thomas, Tortola and St Maarten.

St Maarten

The team from Lagoon Sail Boat Rentals recently re-launched the 9th LSR Jeanneau Sunfast 20. Number 9 spent most of its time in a kids’ playground in Antigua, but was up and ready in time for last month’s North Sails Regatta.
