Carriacou Sailing Series Junior Optimist Regatta

Grenada Sailing Association President Jacqui Pascall reports that during the recent Carriacou Sailing Series, junior sailors in Carriacou got together to train and race the Optimist fleet.  Twenty four children were involved in the activities.  The Grenada Sailing Association’s dinghy instructor from Grenada traveled up to spend the weekend with the children and encouraged them to develop the necessary skills to advance in boat handling.

15th Anniversary Events Planned at Cuba’s Club

José Miguel Díaz Escrich, Commodore of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba, invites you to join in celebrating the Hemmingway international Yacht Club of Cuba’s founding on May 31, 2007. The date coincides with the 57th edition of the Ernest Hemingway International Billfish Tournament from May 28 to June 2.

“It will be a great honour and pleasure to be able to drink with all the Caribbean friends to the long life of the HIYC of Cuba and the strengthening of the friendly relations among this Cuban boating institution and the Caribbean boating community,” says Commodore Escrich. “The HIYC gathers more than 1700 members of 48 countries and has relations of friendship and collaboration with hundreds of yacht clubs, associations and institutions of the international boating community.”

West End Yacht Club, BVI:  Sweethearts of the Caribbean and Classic Yacht Regatta one week later in 2007

For 28 years the “Sweethearts” have opened the regatta season in the BVI the weekend before Valentines Day. But the 29th running of the Sweethearts will be the weekend AFTER Valentines Day,  with registration on Feb 16th and two days of racing on the 17th and 18th.

All other published dates remain the same.  Commodore Martin van Houten explained: “The St Croix Regatta has moved away from the Presidents day weekend and conflicted with Sweethearts. Moving the Sweethearts resolves the conflict and gives boats from the USVI an ideal opportunity to come to the BVI for the three-day weekend and return to the US on the holiday Monday, taking full advantage of the added party time.

“Saturday will feature Schooners in a race classified by length to allow these sweethearts to stretch their full sail inventory. Following the schooners will be the ever popular Single hander’s race around islands in Drakes channel. (Single hander’s may carry a safety man whose only role beyond safety is keeping the beer cool). On Sunday the Regatta will feature the 25th Annual Classic Yacht Regatta for designs over 30 yrs old followed by Classic Wannabe’s for yachts of a design 20 to 29 yrs old. With the expanding interest in Classic Yachts exemplified by the St Martin Classic Yacht Regatta on January 21st a great turn out is expected.

Somewhere in the busy schedule will be the 2nd running of the new event for Valentine Couples: crew to consist of only two sailors who have at least some recognized relationship as sweethearts – if only fleeting? Either person may helm at any time but both “sweethearts” must cross the finish line on the same boat!”

Nevis Yacht Club Holds 12th annual fishing tournament October 28

At their catch and release tournament for all billfish, the Nevis club had 11 boats, fewer than usual, for 2006 due to threatening weather conditions.  Club members report that those who did participate had a great time, with steel pan music for their return to the weigh-in.  Largest fish caught was a 49.2 pound tuna, and anglers also brought in Wahoo, Dolphin, and Kingfish.  Organizers say they would like to make this a 'tag and release' tournament and welcome offers of assistance in the art of tagging and the equipment towards this conservation effort.

The 2007 event is set for October 13, 2007 at Oualie Beach Resort and has a new web site:
