Mount Gay Rum Official Partner to the UKSA

Mount Gay Rum is now an official partner to the United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA), the worlds premier sailing academy.

Formed in 1987, the UKSA has forged a reputation throughout the world for being a centre of excellence in training both experienced and novice sailors in a variety of skills. With many outpost in the Caribbean, they are very involved in the evolution of Caribbean Sailing.

Mount Gay Rum sponsor over 110 regattas globally- 18 of these in the Caribbean, providing much needed financial support to events that test sailors of all abilities, while the UKSA provides a variety of training, support and financial impetus for all its members.

Mount Gay Rum, the sailor’s drink of choice for over 300 years, now joins the UKSA in support of its latest high profile, and highly worthy project, the renovation of Gipsy Moth IV.

Skippered by the intrepid sailor Sir Francis Chichester, Gipsy Moth IV made history between 1966-67 by completing the fastest circumnavigation of the globe by a small vessel, in the time of 274 days. Starting from Plymouth, and stopping off at Sydney and back via Cape Horn, Gipsy Moth IV’s daring journey captured the public’s heart and attention in much the same way Ellen MacArther’s record breaking round the world trip has today. Sadly, this icon of sailing has, over time fallen into disrepair, and it is this that has spurred the UKSA, along with help from Mount Gay Rum, the Academy’s other partners and the sailing community as a whole, to refit the ship ready for a commemorative 40th anniversary journey around the globe.

The Gipsy Moth is also scheduled to visit the Caribbean during its trip around the world- with stops planned in Antigua and Barbados during the Christmas period.
