Cleaner Marinas for the USVI?

Kent Bernier, Jr., one of only five Environmental Protection Agency certified scientific divers in the U.S. Virgin Islands, held a series of day-long workshops in June to encourage voluntary compliance with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration clean marina standards. Only three of 32 marinas in the U.S. Territory currently have pump-out facilities, a key concern to NOAA along with oil spills and pollution from cleaning materials used by boat owners.

Anguilla schedules Summer Races

Anguilla’s Summer Festival is August 3 to 13 and, along with parades and calypso, will feature the Sandy Ground boat race on August 9 and Champion of Champions race on August 13. Racing in three categories includes open hull traditional sailboats.

Classic Regatta Winner to Return in 2007

Charm III, winner of the first St.Maarten-St.Martin Classic Yacht Regatta will defend her title in the 2007 regatta, owner Richard West says. A new participant will be Moonbeam, launched in 1914 and crossing from the South of France to St. Maarten in October for her first visit to the Caribbean. Promotion for the January event has been underway all summer at classic regattas in Europe. Dutch-based Sevenstar Yacht Transport will offer ocean crossing transport discounts on their cargo vessels.

Save the Date: Pro Am Regatta at the Bitter End

Want to race with sailing’s rock stars? Mark your calendar for the 20 th Annual Pro Am Regatta, billed as the only event of its kind in the world. Dates are October 28 to November 4 at the Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda, BVI. Don’t miss the “Russell Coutts vs. Paul Cayard Showdown” exhibition race aboard matched Hobie Getaways to benefit the Hokin Scholarship fund.

Caribbean Dinghy Championships set for August 12 & 13

The Barbados Sailing Association issued a Notice of Race open to six Caribbean countries in Optimist, Laser Radial, Laser Standard, and Echo 12 classes.
